Fakeaway: sausage and egg muffin

Treat yourself to as breakfast that is better than the real deal and will save you money on delivery costs. Serve this homemade sausage and egg muffin with hash browns for a dirty and delicious breakfast treat.

Whenever I have had a truly awful hangover, there is only one solution for me: a sausage and egg mcmuffin. Whenever I’ve ordered one, I’ve always been too tired to go into town to get it and I’ve always ordered it online, despite the Ā£4 delivery charge for a Ā£3 meal…

Well, I’ve decided that enough is enough. No more am I going to waste my money on delivery, this recipe is so easy to make and tastes so much better (if I say so myself).

This recipe features sausage burgers, cheddar cheese and a perfectly friend egg all served in a toasted muffin. In the photo there are 2 burgers, which I did for the aesthetics, but this recipe is for 4 people! This recipe is so easy to make and won’t take you long at all. If you’re sleepy or hungover, you can still make this recipe!

I served mine with my very own chilli jam for a bit of an extra luxury, and we also had these with hash browns (just like the takeaway)!

Save yourself some money by making these sausage and egg mcmuffins at home. I promise you, you won’t be dissapointed.

Sausage and egg mcmuffin recipe

Preperation time: 5 mins

Cooking time: 15-20 mins

Servings: 4

Ingredients
  • 6 good quality lincolnshire sausages
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic granules
  • 1 tsp italian herbs
  • Cheddar cheese (or American cheese)
  • 4 muffins, sliced in half
  • 4 free range eggs
  • To serve: hash browns, chilli jam
  1. Begin by placing your sausages on a chopping board. With a sharm knife, gently pierce the skin of the sausage and make a line down the middle. Gently remove the sausage from its skin and place in a bowl. Repeat with all of the sausages.
  2. Once all the sausage meat is in a bowl, add salt, pepper, garlic granules and italian herbs. Using your hands, mix everything together till it is sticky and all coming together.
  3. Place a pan on a medium- high heat and add 1 tbsp oil. Using your hands, take 1/4 of the sausage meat and shape into a burger shape. Repeat until you have 4 burgers.
  4. Add each burger to the pan and cook until the bottom side is golden brown and crispy. Gently flip over and cook until brown and the centre of the sausage burger is cooked.
  5. While the burgers are cooking, cut your cheddar into slices (if using). Once the sausage burgers are almost fully cooked, top with the cheddar or American cheese slices. Then, using a large lid or a large piece of foil, cover the burgers. Leave to cook for a couple of minutes in the foil, as this will allow the cheese to melt over the burgers.
  6. Once the cheese has properly melted, place the burgers on a clean chopping board. Next, add the muffins to the pan and toast until brown (you can also do this in the toaster!)
  7. Finally, use a little more oil to cook your four eggs until they are crispy with a soft yolk.
  8. Layer your muffins and serve with hash browns and my very own chilli jam for the most luxurious breakfast treat.

Tips: if you have spare sausage burgers, cook them and freeze them and save them for another day!
